What is an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram, also known as an echo, is a type of ultrasound used to look at how the heart is functioning. It’s a painless and non-invasive procedure that lets us see the anatomy, structure and function of all four chambers and valves of the heart, and is performed by a trained sonographer.

What to expect

An echo is a simple test to have done. We’ll ask you to lie on an examination table and a technician will hold a probe against your chest, slowly sliding it back and forth. You might be asked to roll on your side during the test, or hold your breath for a few seconds. The test usually takes around 30-40 minutes.

What to bring

You should wear two-piece clothing. A loose-fitting gown will be provided if required.
