Transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE)
Dr Christopher Choong and Dr Jacqueline Harris are highly experienced in transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE), a specialised form of cardiac ultrasound in which a small ultrasound probe is gently passed into the oesophagus (food pipe) to obtain detailed, high-resolution images of the heart from within the chest. This technique is often requested by referring doctors when more precise imaging is required for diagnosis or management planning.
TOE is similar in principle to an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, except that ultrasound imaging is used instead of fibre-optic visualisation. The procedure is performed under deep sedation administered by an anaesthetist, and patients are generally unaware and comfortable throughout.
The examination typically takes 15 to 45 minutes, depending on its complexity, and may be performed in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Patients are usually required to fast for at least six hours beforehand, unless otherwise advised. Outpatients should expect to be in hospital for approximately four hours in total and must have a responsible escort for discharge.
