Consultant Cardiologist

Dr Christopher Choong is a founding Principal of the North Shore Cardiac Centre. He is a fractional Senior Staff Cardiologist at the Royal North Shore Hospital and a Visiting Medical Officer at the North Shore Private Hospital, where he is the Head of the Cardiology Department.

His affiliations include Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Fellowship of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, and Fellowship of the American College of Cardiology. Dr Choong’s work involves general clinical cardiology and echocardiography, in which he has a special interest and expertise. A more recent focus has been complex non-invasive imaging in the burgeoning field of Structural Heart Disease.

Dr Choong is Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory within the Cardiology Department at Royal North Shore Hospital and also heads the Echocardiography Service at the North Shore Cardiac Centre, which provides imaging for both inpatients and outpatients at North Shore Private Hospital. He is also a regular reviewer for and sits on the editorial board of the prestigious Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography, one of the key international journals in echocardiography. One of his roles at the Royal North Shore Hospital is the training of its cardiology registrars (advanced trainees) to become accredited cardiologists, both generally and more specifically in echocardiography. He was senior examiner in Cardiology for the national-based Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound (DDU), a post-fellowship diploma in ultrasound offered by the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM), and was a member of its Board of Examiners until the cardiology examination was discontinued a few years ago.

Dr Choong obtained his medical degree at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, completed his registrar and cardiology training in Sydney, and was awarded a PhD in Medicine through Sydney University. He completed a Postgraduate Clinical and Research Fellowship, funded by the Australian National Heart Foundation, at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, that is affiliated with Harvard University. He has now worked in Sydney as a cardiologist for more than 30 years, and as a result, has accumulated considerable experience and insight in his field of practice. Working in a large campus, as he does, he enjoys the luxury of being able to easily cross-consult with his cardiological and cardiothoracic surgical colleagues, as well as being able to readily access expertise in other specialties whenever needed.

With more than 30 years of experience as a cardiologist in Sydney, Dr Choong brings extensive clinical expertise and a strong commitment to education, research, and multidisciplinary collaboration across major hospital campuses.
