Dr Jason Harmer

Consultant Cardiologist

Dr Harmer is a clinical cardiologist with a special interest in the management of ischaemic heart disease, heart failure and cardiomyopathies, valvular heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias, as well as risk factor management and preventative cardiology. He also has a keen interest in non-invasive cardiac imaging (e.g. echocardiography and CT imaging), which he routinely uses in clinical practice when diagnosing cardiac conditions or screening patients.

Dr Harmer completed a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Sydney. He also completed a Bachelor of Science (with First Class Honours) in Immunology from the University of New South Wales and a Doctorate in Medicine (PhD) in vascular physiology and non-invasive vascular imaging at the University of Sydney. After completing his medical studies, he undertook Basic Physician Training at Westmead Hospital and Advanced Physician Training in Adult Cardiology at Royal North Shore Hospital. He has a background in clinical research and has worked in the Clinical Research Group within the Department of Cardiology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney. He has multiple peer-reviewed publications in International scientific journals.

He is a member of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ) Education Committee and the CSANZ Equity, Diversity and Culture Committee. He is passionate about providing high-quality education opportunities for doctors-in-training and practicing specialists (including cardiologists), and promoting well-being, professionalism, and equity in health care services in Australia. He is also a member of the Australian Cardiovascular Alliance’s (ACvA) National working group for peripheral artery disease.

Dr Harmer has been involved in teaching for > 15 years and is currently a Clinical Academic in Clinical and Professional Development at the University of Sydney. He has been the Lead Educator for the Cardiovascular Metabolic Management unit of the Masters in Metabolic Medicine for a number of years. He is a Visiting Medical Officer at North Shore Private Hospital and a Consultant Cardiologist (locum) at Royal Darwin Hospital.
